Emergency Department

  • It is open 24 hours a day and only for serious injury or health concerns that need urgent attention, or when referred by a doctor.

Our Emergency Department (ED) at North Shore Hospital is very busy.

Please help us keep our ED free for emergencies. If your condition is not life or limb threatening, you may face a longer wait time while we tend to emergency cases.

 If you are unwell but it's not an emergency please visit your GP, local accident and emergency clinic or after-hours centre.

Driving

From Auckland City

  • State Highway One heading north
  • Take exit 419
  • Turn right onto Northcote Rd
  • Turn left onto Taharoto Rd
  • Turn right into Shakespeare Rd

From Albany

  • State Highway One heading south
  • Take exit 419
  • Turn left onto Northcote Rd
  • Turn left onto Taharoto Rd
  • Turn right onto Shakespeare Rd

Entry

  • The wards are all located in one main building with the main entrance largely sign posted. 
  • There is a main reception with volunteers wearing green vests waiting to welcome visitors and provide assistance. 
  • A ward directory is located on the wall immediately adjacent to the lifts.

  • There are two bus stops located on both sides of Hospital Road near the main entrance.
  • There are numerous bus stops located in surrounding streets including the Smales Farm bus station.
  • Visit the Auckland Transport website for bus routes and timetables.

Taxis

  • A taxi rank is centrally located in the North Shore Hospital grounds on the carpark side of Hospital Road.
  • For patients unable to walk to a taxi, a volunteer or receptionist at the hospital’s ground floor main entrance will call a taxi.
