Bariatric Dietetics

The information provided below only applies to patients having bariatric surgery within Te Whatu Ora Waitematā.

The bariatric team is made up of the surgeons, dietitian, and a nurse specialist to assist you through the bariatric journey at Te Whatu Ora Waitematā. Once you have been accepted into the bariatric pathway, you will be invited to attend a bariatric information seminar conducted by the surgeon and nurse specialist to provide you with the information you require to decide if bariatric surgery is right for you. You will be given a weight loss goal at the information seminar. To assist you with achieving your weight loss goal, the dietitian will invite you to attend a group nutrition session which is your opportunity to learn more about healthy eating and the necessary dietary and lifestyle changes that are required to maximise your results from surgery.

Once goal weight has been met, a provisional date will be discussed with you by the surgeon. You will then be invited to attend pre-operation education session to provide details about dietary requirements prior to having your surgery. After your surgery, you will then be invited to attend post-operation session to provide information about dietary recommendations following surgery.

All group sessions are mandatory as the information is vital for surgery success. If group sessions are not attended, this may impact your surgical date.

These resources go alongside your initial dietitian group session, to help you focus on healthy eating and making healthy lifestyle changes. It is important that you still attend this group session in order to progress in the bariatric program.
