Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)
Specialist care for babies who are born early or become unwell
- The neonatal units at North Shore and Waitakere Hospitals care for sick babies and premature infants
- While in special care, a paediatrician is in charge of baby's care in the nursery
- The nurses in the special care nursery all have training and experience in the care of sick babies
- If your baby is very premature and needs the assistance of a ventilator (breathing machine), they be transferred for care at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Auckland City Hospital
- Deliveries before 32 weeks gestation would normally be delivered at Auckland City Hospital
