VolunteersWaitemata DHB has a number of volunteer groups who support patients and their families/whānau. 

Green Coats at NSH & Front-of-House at WTH

  • Meet and greet people at the hospital main entrances
  • Provide directions and/or walk with people to find their required location
  • Help to manage a gift shop located at main entrance of Waitakere Hospital

Friends of Emergency Departments (FEDS)

  • Volunteers from St John support our Emergency Departments by assisting staff with non-clinical tasks
  • They offer support, communication, information and comfort to patients and their families/whanau

Meals on Wheels (Red Cross)

  • Volunteers from Red Cross deliver meals prepared by our hospitals to elderly, ill and disabled people living at home who would otherwise struggle to provide healthy meals for themselves
  • Delivering a hot meal every day also provides an opportunity for regular social contact for those who may be isolated
  • Red Cross volunteers also provide a service at North Shore Hospital visiting wards with a trolley offering a selection of snacks, books and magazines

Volunteer Stroke Service (VSS)

  • Volunteers from our Volunteer Stroke Service provide conversation opportunities for people with communication difficulties after a stroke
  • They train as conversation partners and can meet clients on a one-to-one basis or in conversation group
