Regional Intellectual Disability Secure Services (RIDSS)

Also known as Forensic Intellectual Disability Secure Services (FIDSS)

Vision 
“To provide high quality care and rehabilitation options that recognise the special needs and effectively promote the rights and hopes of individual offenders with intellectual disability.”
 
Mission statements
To be an effective secure health arm of a seamless range of services providing appropriate care and rehabilitation options:
  • We will assist individuals who are subject to secure care orders pursuant to Intellectual Disability (Compulsory Care and Rehabilitation) Act 2003 (IDCCR) or the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 1992, to learn the necessary adaptive skills and behaviours that will enable them to safely re-integrate into their community
  • We will provide therapeutic and evidence-based assessment, care and rehabilitation from the multi-disciplinary team within a secure environment, which utilises the strengths from social and health models in a transparent and ethical manner
  • Our processes will be mindful of the dignity of the individual, the importance of culture, the need for inclusion of whanau/family; and the strengthening of support networks.
     

Pohutukawa Unit

  • A purpose built unit
  • Two assessment hospital level secure beds
  • Ten medium to longer term rehabilitation national hospital level secure beds
  • Occupational therapists working rostered day and afternoon shifts
  • Registered nurses with mental health or learning disability experience
  • Psychiatric assistants and/or health care assistants with mental health or learning disability experience
  • A social worker, pyschiatrist, senior medical officer and registered medical officer complete the multi-disciplinary team. 
     

Intellectual Disability Offender Liaison Service

  • A community-based consult liaison service
  • Current client load (approx) 40 people
  • A range of clinical supports and interventions are offered.
