Cultural competency courses and resources

With the growing diversity of the population in New Zealand, health practitioners are experiencing more cross-cultural interactions with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) patients from migrant and refugee backgrounds. As a result the Ministry of Health now requires District Health Boards to provide services that acknowledge the diversity of cultures and ensure services are accessible, culturally appropriate, effective and safe.

The Waitemata District Health Board, Asian Health Service Support Services has developed CALD cultural competence courses in conjunction with the University of Auckland - Goodfellow Unit as well as CALD resources to improve health practitioners’ communication and interactions with CALD patients and between staff to staff to increase their understanding of cultural differences and values.
