Why did you choose to work in this field?
Psychiatry gives me the opportunity to work holistically with people, it is an interesting area to study, and there is a reasonable work/ life balance
What does your job involve?
I work in a specialised early psychosis intervention team helping young people recover from a first episode of psychosis.
What do you love about it?
To help someone move from a terrifying place where they have lost touch with reality, to a place where they can find meaning and value in life again can be very satisfying. It is great when you can work with other skilled clinicians to make a positive difference.
What are the challenging bits?
At times dealing with the raw emotions and frustrations of clients, families and staff can be challenging, but also strangely humbling and motivating.
What would you say to people thinking of training in your field?
You will be privileged to be a part of the profoundest period of some people’s lives.
